rhionnach: (Vulcan on the Bridge)

I have now been to see Star Trek three times. (Need I say how much I enjoyed it?) I will be going again soon. It's MY Star Trek, it's been reborn, and I love it!

I have Channel 4 on just now. They are showing "Nemesis", which I enjoyed as a Star Trek film but I now realise that I am very much an original series devotee. All the subsequent versions of Trek were fine in their way apart from Voyager which I detested and stopped watching very early on. The new film, with the original characters, has enabled me to remember why I fell in love with Star Trek all those years ago.

And it has been years. A frightening number of them. I have been a Star Trek fan since it was first shown by the BBC. If I could remember the date that "Patterns of Force" was first shown on the BBC that would be my Star Trek birthday. I didn't see the series when it was shown as a summertime replacement for Dr Who as my father took a weird attitude towards it and refused to allow me to see it. I didn't get to see it until it shifted to Monday nights, opposite Coronation St (dear gods!) which my mother is addicted to. My parents went out for the night and, as I hated Coronation St, I switched over and discovered Star Trek. And that was it.

The following week I was forced to stand in front of the TV, throwing a tantrum, until I got my way and got to watch Star Trek. My parents never have understood my love for Star Trek, I guess they thought I would eventually grow out of it. But, hey, with the new film I'm as bad as ever I was!

I have had so much fun as a Trek fan. I have got to do things and meet people that I would never have had I remained a boring old "normal" mundane. Star Trek took me out of my claustrophobic West of Scotland small town and showed me the universe. It made me think, it made me grow, it gave me possibilities. It's been a huge part of my life and has influenced every part of it. I would not be the person I am now had it not been for Star Trek.

And now my Trek is back!

I just saw it, I did enjoy it and the shots of the Enterprise were way coool, but I'm not sure about the "re-set".. particularly Spock and Uhura and Vulcan. I'd have been happier had things got back to normal. But however, I can see why it's good that they didn't do that.. I am in two minds about it.

I didn't like the Vulcan thing at all. THe Spock and Uhura thing was hinted at in a couple of original episodes. Did you know that originally the first interracial kiss in "Plato's Stepchildren" was written for Spock and Uhura but Shatner persuaded them to change it?

I caught the original BBC run back in 1969. Golly, that makes me feel old.

That is *such* an eloquent testimony to the power of original Trek - don't know if I could claim it to be such a transformative power in my life - although I was an avid follower from the time it first manifested as the 'Who' slot filler in 1969.

Must admit that 'Nemesis' didn't really do it for me, although I did enjoy the sequence where certain officers sing the number I am doing in the current run of HMS Pinafore ("A British Tar").

Oops - the singing of "A British Tar" was actually from 'Insurrection'.
