Uplifting experience
Nov. 19th, 2006 12:40 amYou know how you see notices in lifts which inform you that "This lift is for 8 people"? You look around at the lift in question and wonder how they intend to fit that many people in it. Well, let me tell you, these notices lie! The third week of my new job finished off with getting stuck in the lift along with the rest of my team.
We are based in the basement and for the final part of Friday afternoon we were heading for something taking place on the top floor, so we thought we'd take the lift. One person was waiting for it, and my team of 5 got in, followed by another 2. As the doors shut we realised that we were were now at the full capacity of the lift but we figured it would be OK. Wrong!
We began to ascend and then all movement ceased. So we pressed the button again, as you do, and it moved a bit. We may have reached the next floor but then it stopped, so we tried opening the door. The inner one opened showing us that we were a few feet short of matching up with the outer door. So we pressed the alarm button, which eventually got someone shouting through the door to us. The security person had already left for the day so they weren't too sure what they would do. They suggested closing the door and trying the buttons again. We did and the lift moved upwards again only to stop short of the next floor, which we discovered when we again opened the inner door. We closed the door and then the lift began going down. It eventually stopped at the ground floor and opened both doors, though it was mismatched with the floor by a few inches. We all got out asap and decided to use the stairs.
Quite how long we would have had to wait if it hadn't let us out I don't know. I was rather keen for us not to be held up for too long as I needed the loo!
Apart from that the new job seems to be fine.
